Embryology key concepts

2 revision pages for Embryology, each with the key facts, a memory aid where one helps, and the exam traps.

  1. Apical ectodermal ridge and proximal-distal limb outgrowth

The apical ectodermal ridge (AER) is a thickened strip of tissue at the tip of the growing limb, and its growth-promoting signals keep the limb lengthening outwards.

  2. Limb rotation: lateral upper limb versus medial lower limb

The upper limb rotates laterally (outwards, away from the midline) and the lower limb rotates medially (inwards, towards the midline), so comparable muscle groups end up on opposite surfaces.
