Respiratory System key concepts

2 revision pages for Respiratory System, each with the key facts, a memory aid where one helps, and the exam traps.

  1. Pneumothorax: loss of the pleural seal and lung collapse

A pneumothorax is air in the pleural space (the gap between the lung covering and the chest wall lining), so the lung collapses inwards.

  2. Why oxygen transport needs haemoglobin

Because oxygen dissolves poorly, haemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells) carries almost all of it, binding it reversibly so it can pick oxygen up and give it back.
