Which primary action is performed by the muscles of the lateral compartment of the leg?
- A Inversion of the foot You picked ✕
- B Eversion of the foot You picked ✓
- C Extension of the knee You picked ✕
- D Dorsiflexion of the ankle You picked ✕
- E Flexion of the great toe You picked ✕
Correct!
Incorrect
The answer is B: Eversion of the foot
Explanation
Why B is correct
See Lateral Compartment. Option B is correct because the lateral compartment of the leg contains two muscles, fibularis longus and fibularis brevis, and their common function is eversion, turning the sole of the foot outwards. (They are also called peroneus longus and brevis; fibularis is now the preferred name.) Both muscles are supplied by the superficial fibular nerve, a branch of the common fibular nerve, and both have tendons that pass behind the lateral malleolus, the bony bump on the outer side of the ankle. Fibularis longus also assists plantarflexion and supports the arches of the foot, but eversion is what the compartment is known for. From the anatomical position only a few degrees of eversion are possible. In real life these muscles work to fix the inner edge of the foot during running and prevent it from inverting too much. Memory aid: each leg compartment has a signature action. Anterior lifts the foot (dorsiflexion), posterior pushes it down (plantarflexion), and lateral turns it out (eversion).
- Compartment: the lateral compartment of the leg.
- Muscles: fibularis longus and fibularis brevis.
- Action: eversion, turning the sole of the foot outwards.
- Nerve: the superficial fibular nerve supplies both.
Why the other options are incorrect
- A. Inversion of the foot: Inversion, turning the sole inwards, is mainly produced by tibialis anterior and tibialis posterior. These lie in other compartments, and the lateral muscles do the opposite. Your answer
- C. Extension of the knee: Knee extension is the job of the quadriceps in the thigh. The muscles of the lateral compartment of the leg act on the foot, not the knee. Your answer
- D. Dorsiflexion of the ankle: Dorsiflexion is performed mainly by the anterior compartment. The lateral muscles pass behind the lateral malleolus, which means that they cannot lift the foot upwards. Your answer
- E. Flexion of the great toe: Flexion of the great toe is done by flexor hallucis longus, a deep muscle in the posterior compartment. The lateral muscles pass behind the outer ankle bump to the foot but do not flex the toe. Your answer
