See The Anatomical Position. Option B is correct. The anatomical position is the agreed standard posture used when describing the body: standing upright and facing forward, arms at the sides with the palms facing forward, and the feet together and pointing forward. Describing every structure as if the person were in this posture gives a clear and consistent way of describing where things are, so two doctors always mean the same thing by words such as front, back and above, whatever position the patient is actually in. Anterior means towards the front of the body and posterior means towards the back, so the heart, which lies in front of the vertebral column (the spine), is anterior to the spine, and the spine is posterior to the heart. In the same way superior means above, or towards the head, and inferior means below, or towards the feet, so the knee is superior to the ankle but inferior to the hip. Finally, left and right are always the patient's left and right. A simple memory aid is that the observer and the patient face each other like a mirror, so the patient's left is on the observer's right.
