- A Synarthrosis, amphiarthrosis, diarthrosis You picked ✕
- B Hyaline, fibrocartilage, elastic You picked ✕
- C Sutures, gomphoses, syndesmoses You picked ✕
- D Hinge, pivot, ball-and-socket You picked ✕
- E Fibrous, cartilaginous, synovial You picked ✓
Correct!
Incorrect
The answer is E: Fibrous, cartilaginous, synovial
Explanation
Why E is correct
See Defining A Joint. Option E is correct: joints are classified by the tissue that binds the bones together into fibrous, cartilaginous and synovial joints. A joint is simply any place where two bones meet, so this includes the seams between the bones of the skull as well as obvious joints such as the knee. Joints always balance stability against mobility. Fibrous joints, held by tough fibrous connective tissue, such as the sutures of the skull, are the most stable and move very little. Cartilaginous joints, joined by cartilage, allow limited movement. Synovial joints, which have a fluid-filled cavity, are the most mobile but are less stable, which is why the shoulder dislocates so easily. A helpful memory aid is to read the list in order of increasing movement: fibrous (least), cartilaginous (some), synovial (most). The shape-based names, such as hinge, pivot and ball-and-socket, are used afterwards to sub-divide the synovial joints.
- Classification: by the tissue that binds the bones into fibrous, cartilaginous and synovial joints.
- Mobility: movement increases from fibrous (least) through cartilaginous (some) to synovial (most).
- Shape-based names: hinge, pivot and ball-and-socket sub-divide the synovial joints.
Why the other options are incorrect
- A. Synarthrosis, amphiarthrosis, diarthrosis: Synarthrosis, amphiarthrosis and diarthrosis are the functional categories of joints, based on how much movement they allow. They are not the structural categories, which are named after the binding tissue. Your answer
- B. Hyaline, fibrocartilage, elastic: Hyaline, fibrocartilage and elastic are types of cartilage. Cartilage is the tissue found in one structural category of joint, but the list does not name the joint categories. Your answer
- C. Sutures, gomphoses, syndesmoses: Sutures, gomphoses and syndesmoses are subtypes of fibrous joints, not the three main structural categories. They sit within one structural category rather than naming all three. Your answer
- D. Hinge, pivot, ball-and-socket: Hinge, pivot and ball-and-socket are types of synovial joint, which is only one of the three main categories. They describe the shape of a joint, not the tissue that joins the bones. Your answer
